Center of Mechanical Engineering and Automotive (CIMA - EG06)

The Center for Mechanical Engineering and Automotive (CIMA Group) is a research group at the University of Vigo, led by Professor José Antonio Vilan Vilan and composed of professors and researchers of the University of Vigo from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Heat Engines and and Fluids Engineering. The Group has extensive experience dealing with applied mechanics, analysis of mechanisms, static and dynamic structural simulation using finite element and multibody systems, calculation, design, prototyping, construction and testing of machines and mechanical elements.

The group has carried out in recent years more than 200 projects, of which most of them were financed in calls on competitive basis at regional, national and European level; 16 mechanical equipments accredited internationally by the most important Classification Societies; 21 patents and 2 utility models, 6 of them are under exploitation; 150 JCR international articles; and 31 publications in Congress; 8 doctoral theses completed.

CIMA, which received 13 grants and awards, among them European gold medal and the award for best Spanish patent obtained in the XXXV International Youth Exhibition of Inventions and Products of Geneva in the year 2007. The Group operates the only official laboratory for automotive modifications approval in Galicia, recognized by the Ministry of Industry.

 

Recent works that reflect the activity of the group are:

  • Research, development and manufacture of a new concept of anthropomorphic manipulator arm with titanium additive technologies Work Class ROV type high depth (TitanRob) Connect ERDF project PEME Galicia 2014;
  • Research and development of a new concept of electric vehicle motors, efficient, tricycle wheel, with an innovative tilting and damping performance and innovative design, safety, comfort and sustainability (Motor Vehicle Stilz VMS) project FEDER Innterconecta Galicia 2013;
  • Design and development, structural and systems, using CAD, FEA and CFD tools, a prototype of ecological cleaning dredge suction seabed (Ecodraga) Innterconecta Galicia ERDF Project 2012;
  • Design and prototyping of a new calorimeter (CALIFA) for detection of photons in flight R3B experiment of FAIR;
  • Design, development and manufacture of a prototype aircraft carriers offshore crane and invisible military radar use;
  • Mechanical and structural design, control, pay-load and construction of a type 1/8 femtosatelite CubeSat missions Distributed constellations;
  • Drive system "gearless" and "brushless" adapted for controlled electric wheelchair;
  • Demonstrating a process reuse of WEEE to promote standards in accordance with European standards (Ecoraee), European Life program project in the 2011 call;
  • Structural development of 3D models using FEM techniques from images obtained with computed microtomography for biomechanical simulation test to predict non-destructive bone biomechanical properties in human femoral head;
  • Design and development of a new automotive helmet high level of comfort and security through optimization based on fluid dynamics and structural dynamics simulation elastodynamics;
  • Design and development of a new high-performance process for the production of granite based on the continuous ribbon cutting with diamond segments.
